Fan/Fun Humidifier

One of my first electronic projects was a device that solved a simple problem: How to disperse humid air throughout the house. I converted a simple Costco fan into a "smart fan" that speaks with the humidifier.

When the humidifier turns on, an MCU installed in the vent turns on and sends "I'm alive" via an HTTP request. The vent sends it to another MCU, integrated into the fan, with a relay that turns it on and off.

In a later version, the device also detects when the fan is on and allows operation in intervals (i.e. the fan is on only for a limited time while the humidifier is on). The device was then connected to Samsung SmartThings and Alexa.
